SXSW Eco commissioned our studio to design and build the stage backdrops for their annual design conference. The form was developed in 3ds Max by digitally simulating the folds that occur in cloth. After abstraction, the 24’ x 8’ backdrop was divided into six smaller 4’ x 8’ sections for production and assembly purposes. The panels are made of a thin wood veneer laser cut in strips and assembled using custom designed plastic tabs and bolts. The surfaces were then attached to CNC routed plywood frames, each unique to its respective surface.
